Certificates
There are only five laboratories in the whole world that may issue certificates accepted and recognized worldwide. These laboratories are independent non-profit centers as they are not devoted to buying and selling diamonds, but to research. These laboratories are as follows:
- Gemological Institute of America (GIA)
- European Gemological Laboratory(EGL)
- American Gem Society (AGS)
- International Gemological Institute (IGI)
- Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD)
The procedure followed by such laboratories is the following: |

To determine the color grade:

of them will determine which letter corresponds to the diamond being analyzed from a scale ranging from D to Z. Of the five gemologists, at least three have to agree in their opinion of the color grade. After the analysis performed by the gemologist, the diamond is taken to the DC3000 Gran Diamond Colorimeter, a computerized gemological instrument that measures the light intensity within the diamond. With the result obtained by this colorimeter and by the gemologists, the color grade is assigned.

To determine the clarity grade:
The methodology used is similar to the one used to determine color grade. Each diamond is examined by five gemologists. Each of them plots the location of each inclusion within the diamond, using digital binocular microscopes and computers. The amount and location of the inclusions that each diamond present will determine its grade of clarity. Of the five gemologists, at least three have to agree in their opinion of the clarity grade assigned in such examination.
To examine the cut grade:
This is performed entirely by computerized, digital instruments and by light emissions that analyze and measure the angles, the dimensions and symmetry of the facets, their proportions and the quality of the diamond polish.

As a safety measure and to keep a record of them (in case of theft), the number of the certificate is inscribed in the girdle of all Diamonds certified by any of these laboratories using a micro-laser beam. This inscription will make sure that you are buying the diamond that corresponds to the certificate you are offered.

Therefore, any kind of certificate issued by one sole Graduated Gemologist may be questioned, but a certificate issued by one of these widely recognized laboratories is irrefutable all over the world. A document issued by a jeweler, a trader, the manager or the owner of a jewelry is not so trustworthy as they only represent a personal or commercial point of view.
